Website Setup, MySQL Database...
Follow the instructions below to install the MySQL database environment.  This installation does not use the Debian installation, but rather downloads the software directly from MySQL.  At the time of this writing, the current version of the software is 5.4.45.
  1. Login the server as root.
  2. Download the 'Generally Available' software for Linux from the MySQL website and put it in the '/usr/local' folder.
    (I used the C++ generated software: mysql-5.0.45-linu-i686-icc-glibc23.tar.gz)
  3. Type: groupadd mysql
  4. Type: useradd -g mysql mysql
  5. Type: cd /usr/local
  6. Type: tar xzvf mysql-5.-.45-linu-i686-icc-glibc23.tar.gz
  7. Type: ln -s mysql-5.-.45-linu-i686-icc-glibc23 mysql
  8. Type: cd mysql
  9. Type: scripts/mysql_install_db -user=mysql
  10. Type: chown -R root .
  11. Type: chown -R mysql data
  12. Type: chgrp -R mysql .
  13. Type: /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe -user-mysql &
    (This will start MySQL.)
  14. Type: /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql -u root
    (This will perform a logon to MySQL.)
  15. Type: show databases;
    (The command should list the available databases.)
  16. Type: select host, user, password from mysql.user;
  17. For each host listed in the results from the command above, enter the following:
    set password for 'root'@'<host>'=password('<newPassword>');
    Replace <host> with the host name, and <newPassword> with the root password.
  18. Type: select host, user, password from mysql.user;
    (This will verify that a password was set.)
  19. Type: exit
  20. Type: /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin shutdown -p
    (This will shutdown MySQL.)
  21. Type: cd /etc/init.d
  22. Create /etc/init.d/mysql.server (an example is below)
  23. Type: chown root ./mysql.server
  24. Type: chgrp root ./mysql.server
  25. Type: chmod +x ./mysql.server
  26. Type: update-rc.d mysql.server defaults 60
  27. To make sure the 'mysql.server' script was setup properly, restart the server.
